Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

This post is located in the United Nations Security and Safety Service (UNSSS), Division for Management (DM) of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). The Intern reports to the Chief, UNSSS through the Assistant Chief. The position supports the work of the Security and Safety Service. The internship is for six (6) months with a desired starting date in January 2026.

The position will be UNPAID and full-time, i.e. five days (40 hours per week) under the supervision of the Assistant Chief, coordinator of the Security Risk Management Team. For information on the work of UNOV kindly visit www.unov.org.

Within assigned authority, the Intern will be responsible for the following duties:

Under the supervision of the Assistant Chief, the intern will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Monitor and collect daily security-related information from open sources and prepare summaries or highlight relevant developments.
  • Conduct research on security-related topics and assist in drafting analytical assessments, reports, and briefing notes.
  • Provide support to the Pass and ID Unit, including assisting with badge photo processing and related administrative tasks on a weekly basis.
  • Assist in the drafting of a wide range of documents, including reports, communication materials, background papers, and data inputs for presentations or dashboards.
  • Assist the Office of the Chief with functions related to project planning and coordination.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b) Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Do you meet any of the above criteria? Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Ability to do research in various topics is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
  • Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
