Job Description

Internships

The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. These internships are offered to individuals currently pursuing a university degree or those who have recently completed one. (For full details, please refer to the IAEA Internship web pages.)

Purpose of the Internship Programme:

  • To provide interns with practical work experience aligned with their studies or areas of interest, while exposing them to the work of the IAEA and the broader United Nations system.

  • To enhance the IAEA’s programmes through the contributions of qualified students specializing in diverse professional fields.

The duration of internships typically ranges from a minimum of three months to a maximum of one year.

Organizational Setting

The Department of Safeguards carries out the IAEA’s responsibilities as the world’s nuclear inspectorate, supporting global efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. Its primary role is to develop and implement safeguards that verify:

  • There is no diversion of declared nuclear material from peaceful activities, and

  • There are no indications of undeclared nuclear materials or activities in a State.

The Department includes:

  • Nuclear safeguards inspectors responsible for conducting inspections and verifications in over 180 States.

  • Technical staff engaged in tasks such as developing safeguards implementation concepts, maintaining safeguards equipment, conducting sample analyses, and supporting information and communication technologies and program coordination.

The Division of Information Management (SGIM) implements advanced methodologies and technologies for collecting, processing, and analyzing safeguards-relevant information. This includes:

  • State declarations

  • Sample analysis results

  • Open-source data such as nuclear trade records and satellite imagery

The division’s work supports in-field activities and contributes crucial inputs to the State evaluation process.

Main Purpose

Are you passionate about imagery science and analytics, and eager to apply your skills in a real-world, international setting? The Division of Information Management (SGIM) is seeking an intern with a keen interest in remote sensing and imagery science to contribute to the development of advanced tools for imagery analysts.

As a Building Information Modelling (BIM) Intern, you will work closely with experienced imagery analysts and explore the use of very-high-resolution satellite imagery and open-source geospatial data to create digital 3D models of nuclear-related industrial facilities.

Functions / Key Results Expected

As an intern in the SGIM State Infrastructure Analysis Section, you will support the enhancement of satellite imagery and geospatial data analytics. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Creating digital 3D model prototypes and Proofs of Concept (PoCs) of nuclear-related industrial sites to assess their feasibility and functionality.

  • Collaborating with business users to define project scope and analytics objectives.

  • Developing and applying 3D modelling methodologies to improve geospatial analysis products and strengthen safeguards capabilities.

  • Identifying and evaluating suitable software applications.

Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree in mathematics, statistics, remote sensing, architecture, data science, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated skills in developing BIM models.

  • Experience using AutoCAD, Trimble SketchUp, or similar 3D modelling tools.

  • Familiarity with development tools such as Python.

  • Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is an asset.

Applicant Eligibility

  • Must be at least 20 years of age.

  • Must have completed at least three years of full-time university studies towards a first degree.

  • May apply within one year of completing a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate degree.

  • Must not have previously participated in the IAEA Internship Programme.

  • Strong written and spoken English is essential; proficiency in any other official IAEA language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an asset.

  • Must attach two signed letters of recommendation to the application.
