Duties and Responsibilities
Purpose
This internship is located within the Space Applications Section (SAS) of the Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division of ESCAP. The internship is UNPAID and full-time for a period of three to six months, depending on the needs of the division or office. Qualified applicants who can commit to a longer internship duration will be preferred. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) in-person under the supervision of the Chief, Space Applications Section and the relevant officer/s within SAS. This internship is conducted in person, with the duty station located in Bangkok.
Duties and Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the interns range from providing research support, assisting in project implementation and development of digital platforms and multi-media content. Each intern will have a work plan which will be developed with the supervisor based on the intern’s skills and interests, educational background, and future academic/career plans.

ESCAP aims to support its members and associate members in harnessing the potential of harness space applications, geospatial information and digital innovations to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The work of the section focuses on facilitating and building the capacity of countries to implement the Asia-Pacific Plan of Action on Space Applications for Sustainable Development (2018-2030) through three modalities:
Its major thematic areas of work are monitoring drought from space; integration of geospatial information for resilience building; and space and GIS to help advance the Sustainable Development Goals.

Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.

Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Applicants’ training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Strong research and writing skills are preferable. Strong knowledge on North and Central Asia are is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Fluency in Russian and/or any official Central Asian language is strongly desired. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
Intern Specific text
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
