Internships
Duration: 12 months
The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. Internships are offered to individuals who are currently pursuing a university degree or have recently completed one. (See the Internship web pages for further details.)
Purpose of the Internship Programme:
- To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience aligned with their academic background or interests, and to expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations system.
- To benefit the IAEA’s programmes through the contributions of qualified students specializing in various professional fields.
The duration of an internship typically ranges from a minimum of three months to a maximum of one year.
Organizational Setting
The Department of Nuclear Energy (NE) aims to promote the efficient and safe use of nuclear power by supporting interested Member States in:
- Improving the performance of nuclear power plants, the nuclear fuel cycle, and the management of nuclear waste;
- Catalyzing innovation in nuclear power and fuel cycle technologies;
- Strengthening national capabilities for energy planning;
- Supporting the deployment of new nuclear power plants;
- Preserving and disseminating nuclear knowledge;
- Enhancing the role of research reactors in science and industry.
The department operates in a dynamic and interactive environment, engaging with the Board of Governors, the General Conference, policy and decision-makers, technical counterparts in Member States, and the broader international development community.
The Division of Nuclear Power comprises:
- The Nuclear Power Engineering Section
- The Nuclear Power Technology Development Section
- The Nuclear Infrastructure Development Section (NIDS)
- The International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO)
The division provides engineering, technology, human resource development, and management support to interested Member States in the nuclear power sector.
The Nuclear Infrastructure Development Section (NIDS) assists Member States in understanding and implementing the requirements for launching or expanding nuclear power programmes. NIDS supports the development of necessary infrastructure to introduce nuclear power safely and sustainably, promoting the use of a harmonized framework and recognized international approaches.
Main Purpose
The primary objective of the internship is to support NIDS in the development and implementation of its services, reports, and other support materials provided to Member States. The intern will also assist NIDS staff on various projects, such as the development of reports or web-based services, while gaining valuable experience in an international working environment.
Functions / Key Results Expected
Under the supervision of the Section Head and in collaboration with NIDS staff, the intern will:
- Organize online materials and support external communication efforts;
- Conduct research on technical or engineering topics as assigned;
- Assist NIDS Technical Officers (TOs) in the preparation of workshops and technical meetings, including agenda development and preparation of briefing materials and presentations;
- Support the implementation of NIDS activities;
- Perform other duties as requested.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, or mathematics.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated interest in science and engineering is an asset.
- Willingness to actively pursue learning opportunities.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of nuclear power plants and infrastructure development.
Applicant Eligibility
- Must be at least 20 years old and have completed a minimum of three years of full-time undergraduate study at a university or equivalent institution.
- May apply within one year of completing a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree.
- Must not have previously participated in the IAEA internship programme.
- Excellent written and spoken English is essential; knowledge of another IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an asset.
- Two signed letters of recommendation must be attached to the application.
