Devex Talent Solutions is currently assisting Value for Good in seeking an Investment Associate / Officer – Global Health preferably based in Brussels, Belgium or Luxembourg.

HDX Overview

The European Commission (EC), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Gates Foundation (GF) have recently developed the Human Development Accelerator (HDX) – an innovative financing partnership to address critical global health challenges. HDX has been set up under the European Commission’s European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus (EFSD+) program with €750m of guarantees to underwrite EIB corporate loans and venture debt investments alongside additional TA funding from the European Commission and catalytic grant funding from the Gates Foundation. HDX acts as an origination platform - developing and managing a pipeline of high-risk investments into global health and human development in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa with an initial focus on investments in manufacturing, R&D and supply chains for vaccines and medicinal products / devices.

Role Description

HDX is expanding its team and looking for individuals with a financial, investment and/or strategic background to support the sourcing, structuring, assessment and execution of high impact healthcare transactions. Successful candidates must be entrepreneurial and self-starters who enjoy creating structure out of ambiguity and working in a small team / start-up environment. At the same time, the successful candidate should be comfortable working with established processes and able to strategically navigate them, while maintaining efficiency and agility. Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as flexibility to adapt and manage / work with multiple stakeholders with different working cultures and styles are essential. Given the small team structure, the successful candidate will have an opportunity to actively contribute to developing the vision / strategy of the HDX team, so individuals should also be excited and willing to contribute beyond the immediate job description. Specific role / title will be determined based on the candidate’s background / experience with salary expectations in line with relevant experience.

You will be required to travel regularly to Brussels and Luxembourg to maintain effective relationships with external parties, including but not limited to, the European Commission, EIB partners, Gates Foundation and project promoters, as well as trips to project locations within and outside of the EU as required (normally short trips of up to a week, depending on the project location).

Accountabilities

  • Transaction Structuring, Assessment & Execution
    • Review / distil large amounts of information and analyze, structure, and communicate investment narratives and rationale to different audiences / partners
    • Conduct financial modeling and perform financial analysis including stress-testing, scenario analysis, valuations to support investment decision-making
    • Support due diligence processes, including documentation / information collection, review, coordination and follow ups with clients / project promoters
    • Conduct strategic analysis on the market, product, and competitive landscape as required to test / support the proposed transactions / investment opportunities
    • Prepare investment proposals for committees at different stages of the approval processes within EIB
    • Project manage client and EIB internal teams through the execution process, including proactive management / coordination on timelines, milestones, and resource allocation, to ensure successful project delivery
  • Strategic & Business Strategy
    • Conduct research / identify prospective investment opportunities and support business development / relationship management activities.
    • Support with strategic design / analysis of the HDX strategy and proposition
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with prospects / clients and investor / partner teams

Key Skills

  • Ability to handle ambiguity, think strategically, and work efficiently in a fast-paced, multicultural environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare compelling presentations and written reports
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative or financial modeling skills
  • Strong stakeholder and relationship management skills, able to adapt / work collaboratively with different working styles and to influence effectively
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, set priorities, and drive forward work independently with limited direction
  • Excellent knowledge of English, including very strong written English

Experiences

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years (Associate) or 10+ years (Officer) analytical or business experience in the investments/financing landscape
  • Experience in corporate finance, healthcare financing and/or VC investing.
  • Experience working with DFIs, IFIs or MDBs is an advantage.
  • Experience working in developing countries or working on global health issues (e.g. malaria, HIV/AIDS, TB, and/or maternal and child health programs) is an advantage
  • Experience working remotely with a decentralized team is an advantage

Potential Salary Band: Full-time role on a 2-year fixed term basis with opportunity to extend. Competitive compensation package based upon previous experience.

Location: Preferably based in Brussels or Luxembourg.
