Non-legislative Section provides technical assistance for the adoption and use of UNCITRAL legal texts and coordinates among organizations in international trade law.
Internship objective: assist ITLD officers in fulfilling UNCITRAL’s mandate and provide practical training in international trade law.
UNPAID, full-time, five days per week (40 hours) under direct supervision of ITLD professional staff.
Legislative Branch Assignments:
Assist with research and preparation of comparative legal studies.
Assist with preparation and drafting of legal texts (draft conventions, model laws), including background studies.
Undertake ad hoc legal and administrative assignments as requested.
Non-legislative Section Assignments:
Contribute to identification of legislative reform needs and assistance requirements in selected countries/sectors.
Assist with collection and analysis of case law on UNCITRAL texts.
Assist with development and maintenance of the UNCITRAL website.
Assist with coordination functions of the Division.
Qualifications/Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following:
Enrolled in or recently completed a graduate school program (second university degree or higher).
Enrolled in or recently completed the final year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
Computer literate in standard software applications (word processing, spreadsheets, general research).
Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
Ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
Professional work experience is not required, but field of study should be closely related to the internship.
Excellent command of English or French.
Desirable skills: time management, ability to work under pressure, interact with diverse social and cultural backgrounds, knowledge of standard office computer applications.
Languages
Fluency in either English or French (oral and written) required.
Knowledge of both working languages or an additional UN language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish) is an advantage.
Additional Information
Interns are not financially remunerated by the UN.
Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
Non-citizens or non-permanent residents may require appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
