The Office of the Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) is comprised of three teams:
Core Team: Provides legal counsel on ongoing functions, including assistance to national authorities prosecuting war crimes cases, policy development, capacity building, enforcement of convicted persons’ sentences, requests for early release, witness protection issues, post-conviction litigation (e.g., contempt or review proceedings).
Appeals/Legal Advisory Team: Offers legal advice on international humanitarian law, international and comparative criminal law and procedure, and assists national jurisdictions through case support and capacity-building initiatives.
Category II Team: Provides assistance to national war crimes investigators and prosecutors in the former Yugoslavia.
Interns may receive assignments across the three teams.
Duties may include:
Conducting legal research and factual analysis.
Drafting legal assistance documents.
Cite-checking and compiling/collating materials.
Assisting legal officers in policy development, capacity building, enforcement of sentences, early release requests, witness protection, and post-conviction litigation.
Qualifications/Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following:
Enrolled in, or completed, the final academic year of a law university-degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
Enrolled in, or completed, a graduate-school law programme (Master’s degree or equivalent, or higher).
Previous legal experience is desirable.
Computer literacy in standard software applications.
Ability to prepare and draft legal documents and conduct legal research is desirable.
Good drafting and oral communication skills.
Experience handling sensitive or confidential information.
Languages
Fluency in English is required.
Knowledge of other languages, particularly French or Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, is desirable.
