Internship position located in the Library of the Mechanism’s Registry, Arusha branch, under the supervision of the Library Assistant.
The Mechanism was established by the UN Security Council in 2010 to carry out essential functions of ICTR and ICTY.
The Registry provides administrative, legal, policy, and diplomatic support services, including:
Court support services and supervision of sentence enforcement.
Monitoring of cases referred to national courts.
Management and access to ICTR, ICTY, and Mechanism archives.
Protection of victims and witnesses.
Assistance to national jurisdictions.
The Library offers:
Books on international law, international criminal law, genocide, human rights.
Online Public Access Catalogues and document delivery via email.
In-person reference services and research assistance tailored to user needs.
Responsibilities
Assist in basic library circulation functions: retrieval, check-out, discharge, and recalls of materials.
Support registration of new materials and perform cataloguing operations.
Assign classification codes, call numbers, print labels, and affix them to materials.
Provide visitors with information available in the library or through peer libraries.
Assist in locating online journal articles and responding to reference queries.
Process information by cataloguing and indexing library materials and maintaining the library system.
Guide library users, provide tours, and respond to information requests.
Compile daily news summaries from local, regional, and international media sources.
Research, compile, and present information for communication products and services.
Assist in public relations and protocol services, including preparations for official visits.
Support planning and implementation of public relations activities, including drafting social media messaging and researching archival material for outreach.
Support daily library administration tasks.
Qualifications/Special Skills
Be enrolled in or have completed:
A relevant first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level), or
A relevant graduate program (master’s degree or higher).
Degree must be in a relevant field: library/information science, information management, communications, journalism, multimedia studies, or similar.
No prior work experience required.
Knowledge of major social media platforms is required.
Knowledge of photography and/or audio-visual production is desirable.
Computer literacy in standard software applications is required.
Knowledge of library cataloguing systems is desirable.
Languages
Fluency in English is required.
Knowledge of French, Kinyarwanda, or Kiswahili is desirable.
