Job Description

Chemonics seeks a New Business Manager for its Global Health Supply Chain Office (GHSCO), located in Arlington,

VA. The new business manager provides management of the new business strategy and staff development efforts in a specific business unit (BU). The manager performs multiple roles as needed for business development. The manager collaborates with external clients and manages team members and support and manages proposal preparation to completion of related business development proposals to aspects of project management, performance, and compliance. The manager liaises with technical practices to coordinate technical inputs and review of proposals. Ensures adherence with company policies, applicable laws and regulations, and procurement or contract requirements.

Responsibilities include:

Market Strategy Development and Portfolio Management

  • Supports budgeting, operating expense management, backlog targets, and forecasting
  • Initiates and develops effective working relationships with clients, potential partners, counterparts, stakeholders, subaward partners, technical specialists, and donor agencies
  • Identifies and develops new business leads, clearly identifying Chemonics’ role in current international development assistance programs and trends
  • Externally promotes Chemonics by attending events, networking with clients, and displaying a clear understanding of the past and present portfolio and corporate history
  • Travels to conduct information gathering regarding new business efforts, including meeting with the client and potential subaward partners, and other partners; informs decision-makers regarding strategy and partnership opportunities on proposal efforts
  • May contribute dedicated time to other work streams and functions to achieve BU goals, including operations, project management, and technical practice contributions

Technical

  • Actively engages in technical practice of relevance to areas of interest or focus, sharing information and best practices learned with the company

New Business Development

  • Screens potential subaward partners and makes engagement recommendations to the new business manager and/or director
  • Participates in proposal strategies in collaboration with proposal leadership and director of new business to optimize profitability and win rate
  • Supports new business efforts, including lead development and capture; serves in line roles of increasing complexity and leadership (e.g., proposal coordinator, expatriate/local recruiter, personnel/management/organizational capacity section writer, subs-liaison, cost preparer, and technical writer)

Management and Leadership

  • Collaborates with BU operations team to properly resource new business teams within and outside of the BU
  • Oversees management of new business consultants, including timesheet management and ensuring payments are processed for consultants
  • Learns and promotes strategies for effective teamwork and leadership development and cultivates collaborative working relationships across the company
  • Supervises, mentors, develops, and evaluates assigned staff; provides regular performance feedback and the time and opportunity to grow professionally
  • Provides organizational, planning, and management support to outside facilitators; serves as facilitator for meetings such as new business training
  • Serves as acting new business director and performs other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
  • Experience supervising or mentoring employees preferred
  • Thorough understanding of client requirements and preferred methods of business
  • Fluency in administrative, accounting, and management systems with demonstrated experience mentoring staff in these areas
  • Demonstrated experience writing proposal or report sections or similar
  • Demonstrated experience following standard practices and procedures, receiving general instruction on work progress, and making significant contribution to end results
  • Works independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness in problem solving and initiative to learn new skills
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Language proficiency for assigned geographic area preferred
  • Previous experience working in international development and/or living or conducting volunteer work in developing countries preferred
  • Willingness to travel up to 8 weeks per year
