Job Description

Location:
This Volunteer role is intended to be based in Jamaica. Priority will be given to healthcare workers trained and currently practicing in Latin America and/or the Caribbean, due to the alignment of medical protocols.

Program Summary:

Since Hurricane Melissa, Project HOPE has been supporting Jamaican communities by distributing hygiene items, food, water, medical supplies for hospitals, and other essential items. Due to the widespread damage to primary healthcare facilities (PHCs) in western Jamaica,
the project is operating multiple Mobile Medical Units and supporting primary health care facilities across the hurricane-impacted parishes, focusing on isolated communities and those without functioning primary health care centers.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The primary responsibility of the Nurse Volunteer is to support the implementation of services in an emergency setting. The Nurse will be responsible for roviding nursing services in a primary health care setting. S/he will be responsible for providing client counseling and direct care, including adult, adolescent, and pediatric health services for both chronic and acute conditions. S/he is expected to triage patients, ensure smooth patient flow, provide clinical nursing care, assist with referrals as needed, and provide health education and hygiene promotion. In addition, S/he may also be requested to assist hospital staff as needed.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Provide clinical nursing services for the disaster-affected population according to internationally accepted standards.

· Ensure that patients are accurately registered and recorded for reporting and case management.

· Track patient data daily using tally sheets or other tools provided, and submit patient data as required.

· Monitor diagnostic trends and report to the supervisor as needed

· Collect and analyze project and service data to inform and adjust project objectives/plans, strategic choices, and quality of care in collaboration with Project HOPE team members, local partners, and other relevant staff

· Provide health education and hygiene promotion to patients based on their diagnoses and co-morbidities such as diet, activity, hygiene, and disease prevention (such as need for vaccination, smoking cessation, etc.)

· Collect and analyze project/service data to inform and adjust project objectives/plans, strategic choices, and quality of care / Shelter Medical Team in collaboration with PROJECT HOPE team members, local partners, and other relevant staff.

· Work with program staff, nurses, and auxiliary staff (e.g., CHWs) to provide both didactic and on-the-job training to build capacity and enhance their skills.

· Track daily patient data using tally sheets or other tools provided

· Monitor diagnostic trends and report to the supervisor as needed

· Collaborate with other departments as needed to ensure smooth implementation and integration of services

· Adhere to administrative directives concerning work schedules, record keeping, patient communications, re-stocking of essential drugs, consumables, and other medical supplies

· Provide all services free of charge

· Adhere to the Project HOPE Code of Conduct and internationally accepted humanitarian principles.

· Actively promote PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) standards within Project HOPE and amongst beneficiaries served by Project HOPE.

· Other duties as assigned. The duties and responsibilities listed are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all-inclusive.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

· Must be a Registered Nurse with a valid license to practice, with 3-5 years of experience, of which 1-2 years should be of developing country experience or in low-resource settings, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Healthcare workers trained in Latin America and the Caribbean will be prioritized due to requirements for congruence with medical protocols.

· Experience in overseas programs relating to primary health care, maternal and child health, reproductive health, and HIV/AIDS is
preferable.

· Previous NGO experience is preferable.

· Master’s in Public Health preferred

· Must have excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks in a dynamic, high-pressure environment

· Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

· Must have excellent self-motivation skills.

· Must have the ability to exercise sound judgment and excellent decision-making skills.

· Must be extremely flexible and have the ability to cope with stressful situations

· Must be able to work effectively with various personalities and cultures

· Must have the ability to relate to and motivate local staff effectively.

· Must be able to work with limited resources.

· Must be able to deploy to emergencies on short notice

· Must have excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This position will support Project HOPE’s Jamaica response delivering outpatient clinical care to disaster-affected populations. In
addition to the responsibilities mentioned above, candidates can expect to be living and working in austere conditions. Lifting moderately heavy objects from the ground, carrying a backpack for extended periods of time, and walking or hiking in remote locations may be necessary to perform these functions. Selected personnel are on standby to deploy to a crisis within 48 hours. Personnel may deploy to new areas of operation or lend support to Project HOPE teams already on the ground.
