Location:
This Volunteer Pharmacist role is intended to be based in Jamaica. Priority will be given to healthcare workers trained and currently practicing in Latin America and/or the Caribbean, due to the alignment of medical protocols.
Program Summary:
Since Hurricane Melissa, Project HOPE has been supporting Jamaican communities by distributing hygiene items, food, water, medical supplies for hospitals, and other essential items.Due to the widespread damage to primary healthcare facilities (PHCs) in western Jamaica,
the project is operating multiple Mobile Medical Units and supporting primary health care facilities across the hurricane-impacted parishes, focusing on isolated communities and those without functioning primary health care centers.
POSITION SUMMARY:
As a Volunteer Pharmacist, you will be responsible for preparing appropriate pharmaceuticals to patients. You will achieve this either by executing a physician’s order or by addressing the patient’s problems and needs. You will work closely with a team of international and local staff to ensure that good pharmaceutical practice is achieved and that national rules are complied with.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Accurately review and execute physicians’ prescriptions, ensuring both legal compliance and medical appropriateness.
· Organize the pharmacy efficiently to facilitate easy access to medications and streamline the dispensing process.
· Oversee all processes related to receiving, storing, and categorizing medications, while monitoring expiration dates to prevent
spoilage or misuse.
· Ensure proper distribution of medication orders to clinics in proportion to the number of patients served by each clinic.
· Manage the medication dispensing process, especially for patients with chronic conditions, by developing an efficient system to meet their ongoing needs.
· Ensure thorough documentation of all medications and quantities, particularly controlled substances that require medical reports, and implement effective mechanisms to prevent their misuse or leakage.
· Maintain strict confidentiality and protect the privacy of all patient information.
· Prepare medications when necessary, using accurate dosages and appropriate materials tailored to each patient’s condition.
· Keep precise records of patients’ medical histories and all activities related to controlled medications.
· Collaborate with physicians to develop an optimal system for dispensing medical prescriptions.
· Stay updated with scientific and medical advancements by attending conferences, workshops, and working closely with other healthcare
professionals.
· Fully comply with all relevant laws, regulations, and institutional procedures.
· Perform any additional duties as required within the scope of the position and workplace.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from a recognized university, a valid license to practice pharmacy, and a minimum of two years of
professional experience as a pharmacist, preferably with NGOs or healthcare organizations.
· Healthcare workers trained in Latin America and the Caribbean will be prioritized due to requirements for congruence with medical
protocols.
· Previous NGO experience, preferably.
· Must have excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks in a dynamic, high-pressure environment.
· Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
· Must have excellent self-motivation skills.
· Must have the ability to exercise sound judgment and excellent decision-making skills.
· Must be extremely flexible and have the ability to cope with stressful situations.
· Must be able to work effectively with various personalities and cultures.
· Must be able to work with limited resources.
· Must have excellent communication skills in English.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
This position will support Project HOPE’s Jamaica response delivering outpatient clinical care to disaster-affected populations. In
addition to the responsibilities mentioned above, candidates can expect to be living and working in austere conditions. Lifting moderately heavy objects from the ground, carrying a backpack for extended periods of time, and walking or hiking in remote locations may be necessary to perform these functions. Selected personnel are on standby to deploy to a crisis within 48 hours. Personnel may deploy to new areas of operation or lend support to Project HOPE teams already on the ground.
