Job Description

Internship – Passenger and Cargo Control Programme (PCCP)
Work Location: Vienna, Austria
Expected Duration: 6 months (starting 20 October 2025)

  • The internship is UNPAID and interns work five days per week (full-time – 40 hours).
  • About 90% of the world’s cargo is transported in maritime containers, but less than 2% is physically inspected by customs, allowing for illicit activities (e.g., customs evasion, smuggling of protected goods or weapons).
  • Aircraft are increasingly used by organized criminal groups to move illicit goods; the number of global air passengers is expected to double in the next 20 years, creating risks.
  • PCCP targets illegal shipments by strengthening risk assessment and inspection capacities through Port Control Units (PCUs), Air Cargo Control Units (ACCUs), and Joint Airport Interdiction Task Forces (JAITFs).
  • The programme includes technical assessments, unit establishment, inter-agency cooperation, and training activities globally.
  • Internship will be based in the Passenger and Cargo Control Programme (PCCP) within the Border Management Branch (BMB), Division for Operations (DO), UNODC, Vienna.
  • The intern reports to the Deputy Head of PCCP.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on transnational organized crime, especially illicit trafficking.
  • Assist in drafting concept notes and background documents to inform programme activities.
  • Support fact-checking, editing, and proofreading tasks.
  • Prepare training materials for technical assistance (e.g., workshops).
  • Help organize events, including CND/CCPCJ side events.
  • Contribute to promotional and social media content.
  • Maintain data and documentation using standard UN methods.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications / Special Skills:

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Be enrolled in or recently completed a graduate program (Master’s or equivalent); or
    • Be in the final academic year of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Background in political science, international relations, security studies, criminal justice, or a related field.
  • Proficient in standard computer applications.
  • Strong interest in the UN’s work and commitment to the values of the UN Charter.
  • Able to interact effectively with diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives.

Note: No professional work experience required, but academic relevance to the internship field is necessary. Proof of education status must be attached to the application.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an advantage.

Additional Information:

  • Interns are not financially remunerated.
  • Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses.
  • Non-resident interns may need to obtain appropriate visa/work authorization.
