ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The Policy Manager, Education will be responsible for providing policy analysis and writing on ONE’s key policy areas, primarily in education. This role will also be required to manage and/or take a lead role in a number of policy projects in support of ONE‘s global advocacy goals. This role will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of the education sector and its role within global development policy, with a particular ability to help create policy and advocacy strategies for our work in education. This role will be critical in developing ONE’s policy on education and work in close coordination with teams to create our education campaign. They must be a great team player and self-starter with excellent communications skills. Demonstrable experience in working on education with a focus on vulnerable populations is desirable. The Policy Manager, Education will report to the Policy Director, Agriculture, Nutrition & Inclusive Growth and can be based in either Washington, DC or London, UK. Please note that this is a fixed term opportunity lasting approximately twelve months.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:

  • Provide policy research and analysis in support of ONE’s global lobbying, advocacy, media and campaigning work
  • Help develop ONE’s advocacy around education by consulting with experts, thought leaders, and advocacy organizations to understand the policy opportunity in 2017
  • Scope commissioned research for best practices, proven policies, and innovative solutions in the field that are proven to be scalable and effective
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external partners, experts in the field, thought leaders, and other stakeholders with whom we can have a direct link to for quick information requests, idea sharing, and peer review of campaign materials
  • Prepare, or work with other team members to prepare, documents on specific policy issues, including briefing papers, policy analyses, blog posts, talking points and press releases
  • Represent ONE at meetings and conferences on education, as needed
  • Attend policy-relevant seminars and workshops, and consolidate relevant information for consumption by teams across the organisation
  • As a member of the Global Policy team, proactively contribute to the development of new or emerging global policy areas and ONE publications
  • Any other duties as required

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • A Masters degree in education, international development, international affairs, economics, or another development-related field
  • Significant experience working on development policy, preferably Africa policy, in an NGO, think tank or government agency
  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills with the ability to research a wide-range of topics using multiple sources
  • Strong working knowledge of education data and ability to interpret and analyse
  • Quick turnaround research skills – must have the ability to seek out key facts and statistics that help explain complicated policy topics to broad audience
  • Demonstrable understanding of the links between advocacy, policy-making, legislation, and programme implementation
  • Ability to synthesise policy documents, identifying relevant key points, facts, and statistics that help explain complicated policy topics to broad audiences in a concise way
  • Well organised with the ability to multi-task and operate in a fast-paced environment, with shifting priorities and occasional heavy workloads
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a global team environment
  • Flexible, resourceful and innovative
