Main Purpose of Job:

The British Embassy in Lima is seeking a highly motivated Intern to support its day-to-day operations. This role provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in embassy activities, develop professional and diplomatic skills, and contribute to the Mission’s objectives. Candidates must be enrolled in an undergraduate programme or recently graduated in fields such as International Relations, Economics, Administration, International Business, or a relevant discipline.
In this role, you will provide support to the embassy’s Political Section, focusing on Peruvian domestic politics, human rights, and inclusion.
Roles and Responsibilities:
1. Diplomatic Engagement and Political Analysis (55%)
- Support the delivery of HMA’s and Political Section’s engagement objectives. Arrange high-level meetings, contribute to briefing materials, and provide read-outs.
- Engage with key stakeholders, including political analysts, academics, and international working groups.
- Assist in relationship-building with the Peruvian government, international donors, multilaterals, civil society, and businesses.
- Contribute to regular political updates, covering domestic, electoral, and human rights developments.
- Support drafting high-level correspondence, including letters and Note Verbales.
2. Team Support (35%)
- Provide regular support for the Human Rights and Inclusion lead during the UK’s term in MESAGEN (International Working Group on Gender Equality).
- Provide ad hoc support to the Chevening and Political Officer.
- Assist with project monitoring and reporting under thematic leads’ guidance.
- Conduct background research on political topics.
- Translate documents as required.
- Participate in Post crisis activities, team Away Days, and other ad hoc embassy activities.
3. Learning and Development (10%)
- Attend learning and development events.
- Identify skills and development opportunities for professional growth.
- Actively participate in performance appraisal processes and act on feedback in a timely manner.
Language Requirements:
- English and Spanish: Excellent verbal and written skills required.
Essential Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:
- Willingness to learn about the Peruvian political landscape and democratic institutions.
- Strong organisational skills.
- Confident in English and Spanish.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
- Must be enrolled in an undergraduate programme or recently graduated. Masters students will not be considered.
