Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in Kenya plays a pivotal role in supporting the UN Resident Coordinator (RC) and ensuring cohesive UN engagement across the country. The RC leads and coordinates the activities of the UN Country Team (UNCT) to deliver on Kenya’s sustainable development agenda under the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2022–2026.
Addressing the Prevention of and Response to Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) is a UN priority, and the RCO in Kenya is seeking a motivated national intern to support the PSEA Network in integrating PSEA systematically into humanitarian and development programming across the UN system and partners.
Under the overall supervision of the Head of RCO and direct supervision of the National Peace and Development Officer, the intern will undertake the following tasks:
1. Coordination and Secretariat Support
- Provide logistical and administrative support for PSEA Network activities and meetings.
- Prepare presentations, coordinate with relevant actors to secure venues, registration lists, and materials.
- Take detailed meeting minutes, track action points, and follow up with supervisors and coordinators.
- Maintain an updated database of Network member organizations and focal points.
- Consolidate and archive key documents, ensuring version control and accessibility.
- Update PSEA Network membership lists, including thematic groups.
- Track PSEA training and certification.
2. Communications and Advocacy
- Draft, edit, and format PSEA-related communications (e.g., newsletters, fact sheets, FAQs, infographics, reports).
- Support the development of audio-visual materials for awareness campaigns.
- Monitor media and social media for SEA-related developments and compile summaries.
3. Capacity Building and Knowledge Management
- Assist in planning and organizing training sessions on PSEA, Codes of Conduct, and reporting mechanisms.
- Prepare participant lists, training kits, and feedback forms; compile and analyze training data.
- Research and compile best practices, tools, and guidance from other contexts.
- Support updating PSEA training resources based on current global guidance.
4. Monitoring, Reporting and Data Management
- Consolidate updates on progress against the UNCT PSEA Action Plan.
- Assist in preparing quarterly and annual PSEA progress reports.
- Support mapping and updating of community-based complaint mechanisms (CBCMs) and referral pathways.
- Help design and prepare survey and assessment tools.
5. Event and Campaign Support
- Provide logistical and administrative support for events such as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, World Humanitarian Day, and 16 Days of Activism.
- Assist in venue setup, registration, and coordination with speakers and participants.
- Support communications coverage, including photography and videography.
6. General RCO Support
- Assist in other coordination and communication tasks as needed.
- Ensure compliance with UN guidelines on confidentiality, data protection, and survivor-centered approaches.
Note: The internship is for 6 months, unpaid, and does not attract any remuneration or allowances.
Qualifications/Special Skills
- Enrolled in or recently completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. programme in international relations, human rights, law, communications, gender studies, social sciences, or a related field.
- No professional work experience is required, but the field of study must be related to the internship.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required.
- Demonstrated intention to pursue a career relevant to this internship is expected.
- Proof of enrolment or completion (within one year of internship start) must be attached.
Languages
- Fluency in English is required.
- Knowledge of French is desirable.
Additional Information
Intern-Specific Information
- Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
- Costs related to travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the intern’s or sponsoring institution’s responsibility.
- Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the duty station country must obtain the appropriate visa/work authorization.
- Successful candidates should confirm specific visa requirements before accepting the offer.
