UNDRR (United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction) is the UN system’s focal point for disaster risk reduction coordination and implementation.
Created in December 1999, UNDRR is led by the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG) and has over 160 staff across headquarters in Geneva and regional offices.
UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses, and reports on progress in implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030, supports regional and national implementation, and catalyzes action with UN Member States and partners including civil society, private sector, parliamentarians, and the science and technology community.
This internship is located in the UNDRR Bonn office.
The internship is full-time, in-person, and unpaid, with interns working five days per week under the supervision of Programme Officers.
Duties and Responsibilities
Support UNDRR’s climate change portfolio, including the comprehensive risk management (CRM) programme and engagement in global climate change processes on adaptation and loss and damage.
Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, reports, issue briefs, talking points, articles, and case studies.
Support research, development, and review of technical and methodological guidance and documentation.
Provide substantive note-taking support in meetings.
Support UNDRR’s engagement in the UNFCCC COP30 preparations.
Contribute to advancing comprehensive risk management activities coordinated by the Bonn office.
Assist in organizing and participating in events, workshops, webinars, and trainings.
Qualifications/Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
Enrolled in or completed a graduate school programme (Master’s or PhD or equivalent) in fields related to programme management, environmental affairs, climate change, disaster risk reduction, environmental or social sciences, geography, economics, statistics, or data sciences.
Enrolled in or completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in the same fields listed above.
No prior professional work experience is required.
Field of study must be closely related to the type of internship applied for.
Applicants must provide proof of enrollment or degree completion at the application stage and an official certificate at a later stage.
Languages
Fluency in English is required.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
