Duties and Responsibilities
The desired starting date is 1 August 2025, and the internship will last for 6 months.
The internship is UNPAID and interns are expected to work five days per week (part-time).
The Programme for Central Asia outlines the proposed scope and focus of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) work in Central Asia from 2022 to 2025. The programme is carried out by UNODC under the lead of the Regional Office for Central Asia (ROCA) based in Tashkent, utilizing the expertise and infrastructure of UNODC Programme Offices across Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, as well as UNODC Headquarters in Vienna. The Programme is aligned with the global UNODC Strategy 2021–2025, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and national priorities. It aims to:
- Support Member States in achieving priority outcomes in countering drugs, crime, corruption, and terrorism in the sub-region.
- Increase the responsiveness, efficiency, and effectiveness of UNODC’s support to the sub-region.
Under the overall supervision of the UNODC ROCA Officer, the selected intern will provide support in the implementation of activities within the framework of the UNODC Programme for Central Asia 2022–2025. Responsibilities include:
- Supporting the organization of meetings, events, and conferences, including side events to strengthen strategic engagement with UN system partners.
- Assisting in processing, drafting, and finalizing training materials.
- Supporting social media campaigns.
- Developing communication materials based on good practices, impact examples, and achievements.
- Assisting in data collection related to science, technology, and innovation practices.
- Conducting web research and providing analysis on science, technology, innovation, and sustainable development issues.
- Adding data to relevant databases.
- Providing support in operations, including finance, procurement, human resources, and general administration.
- Assisting with archiving tasks such as preparing procurement materials, registering archived files, and updating archive records.
Qualifications/Special Skills
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a graduate degree in law, international relations, management, business administration, finance, social sciences, or other relevant academic disciplines.
- Must meet one of the following:

- Enrolled in or recently completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
- Enrolled in or recently completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
- Computer literate in standard software applications.
- Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
- Proven ability to interact effectively with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing tolerance and understanding of diverse perspectives.
Note: Applicants are not required to have professional work experience. However, their field of study must be closely related to the internship. Proof of eligibility must be attached to the application, and an official certificate will be required at a later stage.
Languages
- Fluency in spoken and written English and Russian is required.
- Knowledge of Kazakh is desirable.
- Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, or Spanish) is an advantage.

- Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
- All travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the sole responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
- Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the host country may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization.
