Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is the guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its protocols, including those on Trafficking in Persons and the Smuggling of Migrants. UNODC supports Member States in implementing these protocols through technical cooperation, legal assistance, international collaboration, and victim-centered approaches.

The internship is based in the Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Section (HTMSS), part of the Organized Crime and Illicit Trafficking Branch (OCB), Division for Treaty Affairs (DTA), UNODC in Vienna.

HTMSS seeks several interns to support its work in the areas of:

  • Technical cooperation delivery
  • Normative and policy development
  • Knowledge production and innovation
  • Strategic partnerships

Interns will support activities under the Global Action against Trafficking in Persons and the Smuggling of Migrants. The internship will focus on Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) and data collection, with the following tasks:

  • Conduct background research, including country/regional assessments, trend analysis, and initiative mapping.
  • Assist in developing and disseminating data collection tools (e.g., surveys).
  • Support communication with field colleagues, data compilation, and secure data storage.
  • Assist in data analysis and contribute to report writing.
  • Draft briefing notes, presentations, and communication materials.
  • Support the preparation of strategic presentations for donors and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to team strategies such as impact measurement and data collection frameworks.
  • Perform other related tasks as requested.

Qualifications and Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate programme (second university degree or higher), OR
  • Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

  • Have academic background in criminology, law, political or social sciences (including psychology, international relations) or a related field, with a focus on data/research.
  • Demonstrate strong data analysis and drafting skills.
  • Be proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Show a strong interest in the work of the United Nations and its values.
  • Have the ability to work in a multicultural environment with respect for diversity and differing viewpoints.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).
