Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is based at the UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (UNCITRAL RCAP), located in Incheon, Republic of Korea. UNCITRAL RCAP is a unit within the International Trade Law Division (ITLD), Office of Legal Affairs, United Nations, Vienna. The Division serves as the secretariat of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).
The Centre’s objectives include:
- Enhancing international trade and development in the Asia-Pacific through promotion of legal certainty
- Disseminating international trade norms and standards, especially those developed by UNCITRAL
- Providing technical assistance to States on adopting and interpreting UNCITRAL texts
- Coordinating with international and regional organizations involved in trade law reform
- Serving as a communication channel between States in the region and UNCITRAL
Internship Modality
- Unpaid, full-time, in-person in Incheon, Republic of Korea
- Remote internship may be offered in light of visa or travel restrictions
- Interns must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for part or all of the duration
Specific Assignments
- Assist in preparing substantive documents related to the operations and activities of the Centre
- Support the organization of conferences and events
- Contribute to identifying legislative reform needs and technical assistance requirements
- Collect and analyze case law, national legislation, and legal developments on UNCITRAL texts
- Help develop and maintain the Centre’s website and publicity materials
- Support coordination functions of the Centre
- Undertake ad hoc legal and administrative tasks as needed
Qualifications / Special Skills
To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher)
- Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent)
Additional requirements:
- Computer literacy in standard software applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet research)
- Familiarity with Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, WordPress, HTML, and electronic document management is an advantage
- Demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter
- Ability to interact respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and beliefs
- Applicants must provide proof of enrollment or recent graduation
Desirable attributes:
- Knowledge of standard office applications
- Ability to manage time and prioritize tasks effectively
- Experience working in multicultural environments
- Field of study related to law, international relations, trade, or similar disciplines
Languages
- Fluency in oral and written English is required
- Knowledge of any other UN official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) or regional languages (e.g., Korean, Japanese) is an advantage
Additional Information
- This internship is UNPAID and full-time (40 hours/week)
- Interns report to and are supervised by assigned staff members
- Part-time internships may be considered, but preference is given to full-time availability
- Applicants currently employed are strongly encouraged to take a leave of absence during the internship
- Selected interns must report any current or future employment during the internship period
- Failure to disclose employment information may result in offer retraction or internship termination
