Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is a global intergovernmental treaty focused on the conservation and sustainable use of migratory species and their habitats.
  • Multiple intergovernmental instruments operate under CMS and are supported by the CMS Secretariat, including ASCOBANS, AEWA, and EUROBATS.
  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) provides administrative functions to CMS and its related agreements and supports global environmental governance.
  • The CMS Office – Abu Dhabi coordinates the implementation of:
    • The Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation and Management of Dugongs and their Habitats throughout their Range (Dugong MOU).
    • The Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Birds of Prey in Africa and Eurasia (Raptors MOU).
  • The Office supports international initiatives such as the 2030 Seagrass Breakthrough, aimed at conserving and restoring seagrass ecosystems for biodiversity, climate resilience, and community livelihoods.
  • The internship offers hands-on experience in international environmental cooperation, communications, partnership-building, and resource mobilization.

Under the supervision of the Executive Coordinator and/or Programme Management Officers, the intern will support the CMS Office – Abu Dhabi in the following areas:

  • Communication
    • Support the development of communication materials including news stories, website updates, newsletters, and social media content.
    • Assist in designing and disseminating outreach and visibility materials for the Dugong MOU, Raptors MOU, and the 2030 Seagrass Breakthrough.
    • Support the organization of communication events and awareness campaigns highlighting CMS Abu Dhabi activities.
    • Contribute to maintaining and updating the Office’s website and internal content platforms.
  • Partnerships
    • Support mapping and maintenance of a partner and stakeholder database, including governments, NGOs, research institutions, and private sector actors.
    • Assist in drafting background notes, briefs, and summaries on existing and potential partnerships.
    • Support preparation of materials and presentations for partner and donor meetings.
    • Assist in documenting partnership meetings, including taking minutes and archiving records.
  • Resource Mobilization
    • Support research on potential donors and funding opportunities aligned with the Office’s mandate.
    • Assist in preparing funding overviews, donor profiles, and progress reports.
    • Contribute to tracking funding pipelines, agreements, and contributions.
    • Support donor events, briefings, and outreach activities.
  • Other Responsibilities
    • Carry out additional tasks as requested by the supervisor.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Applicants must meet one of the following:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher).
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level).
    • Have completed a university degree.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with academic background in: communication, journalism, public relations, marketing, business administration, development studies, international relations, environmental policy, sustainable development, or related fields.
  • Environmental or natural science backgrounds (biology, ecology, environmental science) are an asset.
  • Applicants must:
    • Demonstrate strong interest in communications, partnerships, and resource mobilization for international environmental work.
    • Show commitment to the principles of the United Nations.
    • Demonstrate ability to work effectively in multicultural environments.
    • Be proficient in standard computer software.

Languages

  • English and French are the UN Secretariat working languages.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution.
  • Interns may be required to obtain appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
  • Selected candidates must clarify visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
