Duties and Responsibilities

Organizational Setting

  • UN-Habitat is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities.
  • Serves as the UN focal point for urbanization and human settlement issues.
  • Works globally to build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities.
  • Supports implementation of the SDGs—particularly SDG 11—and the New Urban Agenda.
  • The Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP), based in Fukuoka since 1997, oversees 15 country offices and engages in 42 countries across the region.

Internship Context

  • Internship is based at UN-Habitat ROAP in Fukuoka.
  • Aligned with UN-Habitat’s Strategic Plan 2026–2029, focusing on:
    • Equitable and inclusive prosperity for poverty eradication.
    • Environment and climate action.
    • Preparedness, response, recovery, and reconstruction.
  • Internship is unpaid and full-time (35 hours/week).
  • Interns are responsible for visas, travel, insurance, and accommodation.
  • Interns cannot apply for or be appointed to international professional positions during the internship and for six months after completion.
  • The internship offers exposure to both local/country technical assistance and regional normative work.

Responsibilities
Daily tasks depend on background and unit needs. The intern will work under a Substantive Officer and may support one or more thematic areas:

Thematic Areas

  • Support to country-level and sub-regional programmes.
  • Support to project/programme monitoring, reporting, and evaluation.
  • Support to research, publications, and communication.

Duties may include:

  • Assisting in planning, implementation, monitoring, reporting, and evaluation of regional and country projects.
  • Supporting inter-agency collaboration and coordination across country teams on development and humanitarian issues.
  • Assisting with administration, budgeting, and management of new and ongoing projects.
  • Supporting resource mobilization, including tracking and responding to funding calls.
  • Providing information and knowledge management support.
  • Preparing concept notes, background documents, project documents, and publications.
  • Supporting communications, drafting web stories, and managing website content.
  • Assisting in preparing, implementing, and following up on meetings and workshops.
  • Performing other assignments as needed for ROAP’s work programme.
Qualifications / Special Skills

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Enrolled in a graduate programme (second university degree or higher).
  • Enrolled in the final year of a first university degree programme (Bachelor’s or equivalent).
  • Recently graduated with a Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, or equivalent.

Additional requirements:

  • Computer literacy in standard software (Microsoft Office suite).
  • Strong interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to UN values.
  • Ability to interact respectfully and effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

  • Architecture, Urban Design, Urban/Regional Planning, Geography, Geospatial Sciences
  • Migration & Displacement, Humanitarian Management, Protection
  • Environmental Management, Waste Management, Ecology, Biodiversity, Climate Change, DRR, Resilience

  • Public Communications, Journalism, Publication Management

Additional skills:

  • Strong communication skills (including virtual environments) and ability to produce documents, presentations, and social media content.
  • Strong research skills in sustainable urban development or climate-related social dimensions are desirable.
Languages
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
