Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global authority on environmental matters, responsible for setting the global environmental agenda and promoting coherent environmental action across the UN system. This internship is located at the Headquarters of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions in Geneva. The BRS Secretariat oversees three key multilateral environmental agreements that aim to protect human health and the environment from hazardous chemicals and wastes.

The selected intern will be placed within the Public Awareness and Outreach Unit in the Executive Office of the BRS Secretariat. Under the direct supervision of the Public Information Officer, the intern will:

  • Research, ideate, and develop engaging social media content in various formats (videos, cards, infographics, interactive posts) for use across all BRS digital platforms in three languages.
  • Assist in drafting English-language social media posts for BRS platforms, focusing on multimedia stories, awareness campaigns, and UN International Days.
  • Support the research, curation, and presentation of stories, images, and videos for BRS’s digital platforms, including using Trello boards.
  • Contribute to the production of translated versions of videos and graphics.
  • Assist in compiling regular analytics reports on digital content performance.
  • Help build and maintain a library of high-quality images and videos for the BRS archive.
  • Support coordination with influencers and strategic partners.
  • Contribute to the production of the BRS Highlights Newsletter.

Qualifications/Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Preferred fields of study include:

  • Business management
  • Public administration
  • International law (including international environmental law)
  • Environmental management (including chemicals and waste management)

Professional work experience is not required, but applicants must have a field of study relevant to the internship.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of Spanish, Arabic, Russian, or another official UN language is desirable.
  • The official UN languages are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish.

Intern-Specific Text
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. All costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the internship country may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization. Selected candidates should confirm visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
