Duties and Responsibilities
The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Digital Communications Assistant and the overall supervision of the Officer-in-Charge. Tasks may include, but are not limited to:

1) Supporting digital strategy implementation:

  • Assist in developing engaging digital assets (e.g., cards, videos, explainers) for UN Brazil’s (@onubrasil) social media accounts
  • Edit and produce short video content for social media and websites, including adding subtitles in English and Portuguese
  • Contribute to digital campaigns related to UN priorities (e.g., climate change, human rights, information integrity) by drafting copy and organizing schedules
  • Conduct research on emerging digital trends and opportunities to expand UN Brazil’s digital presence and engagement

2) Supporting events management and organization:

  • Assist in organizing events, press conferences, campaigns, and public outreach activities
  • Support outreach efforts with partners and the UN System in Brazil
  • Help map potential media and civil society partners and sponsors
  • Assist in updating and expanding mailing lists
  • Support relationships with suppliers

Qualifications / Special Skills
To qualify for the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following academic criteria:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (Master’s degree or equivalent)
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent)

Additional requirements:

  • No prior work experience is required
  • Academic training, coursework, or skills must be relevant to the internship and benefit the United Nations

Languages

  • Fluency in oral and written Portuguese is required
  • Intermediate English is required
  • Knowledge of French is an asset, as it is also a working language of the UN Secretariat

The internship is based at the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Rio de Janeiro, which operates under the Department of Global Communications (DGC). Key details include:

  • UNIC Rio was established in 1947 and is the first UN Information Centre in Latin America and the Caribbean
  • The internship offers an exciting opportunity to help UNIC disseminate up-to-date information about the UN and promote engagement with Brazilian audiences
  • Interns should have good knowledge of standard applications (e.g., MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams) and design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud)
  • Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is desirable
  • Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable
  • The internship is remote and part-time (<34 hours/week) but can be adjusted based on the intern’s availability
  • Number of available positions: 2

Intern-Specific Information

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations
  • Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the intern’s responsibility or that of their sponsoring institution
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the internship location may need to obtain a visa or work authorization
  • Selected candidates should discuss visa requirements before accepting the internship offer
