Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations, founded in 1948.
  • Mission includes the design, monitoring, and evaluation of public policies, and provision of advisory services, expertise, and training to governments, along with support for regional and international cooperation.
  • Internship in the Cepal Review Unit in Santiago, Chile: 4 months, renewable up to 6 months depending on Office needs.
  • Selected candidates may be chosen on an “as-needed” basis during the posting period.
  • Under the supervision of the Chief of Cepal Review Unit, the intern is expected to:
    • Search, collect, and organize information and reference materials on economics and development issues from various sources.
    • Review and critically analyze academic articles.
    • Carry out other minor tasks as required by the Division.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Education: HS Diploma required. Applicants must be a student in the final year or have completed:
    • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. program, or equivalent.
  • Experience: Not required for the UN Internship Programme.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Good knowledge of standard software applications (MS Word, MS PowerPoint).
    • Ability to draft working documents and papers is highly desirable.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is an advantage.

  • Laptop Equipment: Interns may need to bring their own laptop as institutional laptops cannot be guaranteed.
  • Work Email: A work email account may not be provided; interns may use their personal email for communication.
  • Internet Access: Institutional Wi-Fi requires a work email; interns without one can access the guest Wi-Fi by registering personal information.

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the host country may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
  • Successful candidates should discuss visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
