Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides vital services in Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies, and Training to peacekeeping and special political missions worldwide, as well as to other UN entities.
This internship is located in the Digital Technologies Support Unit (DTSU) of the Infrastructure and Operations Section (IOS), within the Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies (SGITT) at UNGSC in Valencia, Spain.
- The Intern will report to the Chief of DTSU.
- The internship is unpaid, full-time, and lasts for six (6) months.
- Interns are treated as full members of the team, contribute to meaningful projects, and gain exposure to the broader work of the United Nations.
Primary Project: 3D Print as a Service (3DPaaS)
The 3DPaaS initiative aims to simplify the procurement of spare parts in field missions through additive manufacturing, enabling on-demand, localized production.
Tasks include:
- Assist in designing 3D models using CAD/CAM software (e.g., Autodesk Fusion 360, Shapr3D, Meshmixer, Meshlab).
- Prepare models for printing using slicing software (e.g., Ultimaker Cura, Chitubox) and optimize for FDM and SLA technologies.
- Support the 3D scanning process using scanner-dependent software.
- Contribute to prototyping projects for education, research, or community use.
- Maintain the 3DPaaS website, including content updates, basic troubleshooting, and platform development support.
- Assist in planning 3D technology projects by developing project plans, timelines, and resource requirements.
- Help evaluate and improve 3D printing workflows and recommend Industry 4.0 technologies such as automation and digital monitoring.
- Support plastic waste recycling initiatives by helping convert waste into usable 3D printer filament and tracking materials.
- Participate in organizing workshops and events to promote 3D printing technologies.
Qualifications / Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following:
- Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate programme (second university degree or higher).
- Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s degree).
Additional qualifications:
- No professional experience required, but studies should be related to the internship.
- Proof of academic enrollment or completion is required.
- Computer literacy in standard applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Proficiency with office equipment (scanner, printer, etc.).
- Familiarity with slicing software (e.g., Ultimaker Cura, Chitubox).
- Ability to model simple 3D shapes using Autodesk Fusion 360 or similar platforms.
- Knowledge of FDM and SLA 3D printing technologies.
Languages
- Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
- Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is an advantage.

- Interns are not financially compensated by the United Nations.
- Travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution.
- Interns who are not citizens or residents of the internship country may need to obtain a visa and work authorization.
