Job Description

World Learning is preparing for an anticipated USAID project to support the Dominican Republic’s efforts to improve the access and quality of inclusive basic education for students. The SEL Specialist will lead the development early warning systems for primary schools and will support the incorporation of SEL principles and practices teaching and learning materials for early grade education. This role is contingent on World Learning’s consortium winning the proposal. The SEL Specialist will report to World Learning’s representative in the Dominican Republic. The role will work closely with a wide range of project stakeholders, including government representatives from the Ministry of Education and our partner organizations. The DR-based team will work under the supervision of the Senior Education Specialist, based in World Learning’s HQ office.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development of an early warning systems (EWS) for early grade students.

• Lead SEL contextualization through the reviewing materials and trainings and engaging with key project stakeholders.

• Once the EWS is developed, lead the integration of the EWS into other project activities, such as teacher training, in coordination with relevant partner staff and project stakeholders.

• Serve as liaison with project stakeholders and partners on issues pertaining to SEL.

• Support the Literacy Specialist in developing and testing diagnostic tools for students.

• Develop tools to support teachers in learning and implementing SEL practices in the classroom.

• Provide technical leadership to conduct assessment and monitoring of SEL activities.

• Provide technical guidance to the Chief of Party and Deputy Chief of Party, internal and external consultant/service contract partners.

• In coordination with World Learning’s partners, provide training, as needed and requested, to schools, school administrators, and Ministry of Education officials on key SEL practices and concepts.

• Travel regularly throughout Dominican Republic to monitor and follow-up on project activities.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in education, child psychology, or related field, with at least 5 years relevant experience in SEL or psychosocial support for basic education development.

• Experience developing inclusive materials strongly preferred.

• Track record of performance excellence in meeting targets and objectives.

• Experience working with high-profile stakeholders, including from government agencies.

• Experience working with early warning systems; preference for candidates who have successfully developed and deployed them in similar contexts.

• Experience and comfort coordinating with remote colleagues.

• Fluent in Spanish and English.

• Experience with international donor-funded projects required, USAID experience strongly preferred.

• Strong understanding of the how school systems incorporate new practices.
