Job Description

General Summary/Purpose

The Business Innovations Strategist sets and leads TCI’s strategy for creating new and renewed business with public and private sector donors (including bilateral, multilateral, and foundation donors), in line with TCI’s programmatic vision, mission and goals. Reporting to the Project Director and Executive Director, the Associate Director for Donor Engagement is responsible for planning, formulating and implementing TCI’s resource mobilization strategies and activities.

This role requires the Business Innovations Strategist to mobilize and support TCI country program leadership throughout Africa and Asia to identify, capture and develop new business opportunities; ensure effective strategic partnerships and donor relationships; and foster effective and responsive cross-functional participation from within the team. This leadership position requires strong commitment to TCI’s mission and core tenets and a desire to succeed in a competitive resource mobilization environment with exceptional communication and relationship management skills.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Output Marketing

  • Conduct landscaping of TCI products and platform
  • Ability to recognize TCI products that could be taken to market and monetized which will be reinvested in the platform.
  • Commercialization of program innovations

Resource Mobilization

  • Understand the current program and grantees across all countries in which TCI operates, including reports, deliverables and timelines.
  • Plan, formulate and implement resource mobilization strategies and activities.
  • Identify new opportunities for revenue growth and clearly communicate to key stakeholders
  • Build out revenue and inventory models to illustrate the potential income generation opportunities within the existing model
  • Lead the design and implementation of a comprehensive resource mobilization strategy to ensure growth and diversification, including regular reporting on the strategy goals.
  • Ensure the resource mobilization strategy closely aligns with TCI’s communication, operations, M&E and finance strategies and plans.
  • Archive both successful and unsuccessful concept notes and proposals for future use.

Donor Cultivation

  • Create a work plan for identifying, cultivating and managing relationships and negotiations with donors and external partners for development of multi-year programmatic initiatives, in sync with TCI priorities.
  • Under the guidance of the Director and Executive Director, take initiative to grow and expand TCI’s current funding partners’ base, through effective stewardship and identification of new funding opportunities.
  • Work with program and finance staff to develop concept notes, proposals and budgets that align with TCI priorities.
  • Mine bilateral, multilateral, philanthropic and private sector partners and translate into opportunities (in funds and leverage) to further grow TCI’s resources and program.

Donor Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with current and prospective funding partners, to raise awareness of TCI’s work, enhance collaboration and identify resource mobilization opportunities.
  • Organize and lead briefings, meetings, visits and events with current and prospective funding partners, draft reports and talking points and set action plans for follow up, as necessary.
  • Coordinate with technical teams to prepare responses to queries to funding partners.
  • Support technical teams to ensure compliance on donor requirements, including timely and quality reporting and delivery.

Leadership and Overall Management

  • Engage with TCI HQ and country teams to assure the quality of innovative funding proposal developed together with partner organizations.
  • Serve as the lead proposal manager for selected bids as necessary.
  • Report against agreed indicators to support TCI’s monitoring of resource mobilization.
  • Capture lessons learned in resource mobilization and business development to support improvement of organizational policies and procedures.
  • Monitor financial commitments for family planning in select cities and track and analyze trends in commitments over time.
  • Develop and maintain TCI’s dashboard to monitor resources (both from donor and local governments) to inform decision-making.
  • Operate with a high level of independent action in developing work plans, liaising with partners, donors, regarding implementation of programs, and monitoring
  • Represent TCI in key meetings and events and other fora as appropriate, to report on progress achieved, donor and local commitment, present papers/ideas to influence the agenda and drive donor interest and commitment to TCI.

Minimum Qualifications (Required)

Advanced academic degree in international relations, economics, business, international relations, public health or related discipline.

  • Minimum of six (6) years of experience at large-scale international development and/or global health organization in resource mobilization and business development, including working for international organizations, foundation, philanthropy or other initiatives

Preferred Qualifications

Country level experience preferred.

  • Experience in strategic partnership development with demonstrated record of accomplishment of successful donor cultivation and management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English language is essential; proficiency in French is desirable.
  • Ability and willingness to adjust work schedules and priorities to communicate with international colleagues meet deadlines and juggle multiple opportunities.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel up to 20 percent of the year, as needed.
  • Able to take independent action and appropriate risks necessary to achieve results.
  • Adapts approaches to meet different needs and concerns of TCI and partners.
  • Commits to TCI’s core tenets, team goals and works effectively across the team with individuals of different views, culture, nationality, gender and age.
  • Exemplifies the highest standards of honesty and integrity in professional and personal conduct.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • In-depth and proven experience managing donor relations (USAID, corporate and foundation, FP donors) and in-country counterpart relations (Ministry of Health officials) with an ability to liaise with HQ and partners.
  • Technical knowledge in sexual and reproductive health (family planning, maternal and child health).
  • Direct experience developing successful complex project proposals as well as private sector and philanthropies.
  • Proven experience communicating effectively, building and maintaining strong relationships both externally and internally, including proven results working strategically with multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent facilitation, writing, diplomatic and interpersonal skills with an ability to be a strong presence in work plan meetings, data workshops, donor and stakeholder meetings.

The Challenge Initiative (TCI) represents a business unusual approach to providing lifesaving reproductive health and family planning information and services, including adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health (AYSRH), to underserved poor communities in urban areas, building on the demonstrated success of the Gates Foundation’s Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (URHI). The TCI model is based on rapidly scaling up and sustaining proven family planning and AYSRH solutions by cultivating a culture of local ownership, innovation, learning, exchange and continuous improvement. TCI also leverages funding support from other bilateral, multilateral donors as well as foundations and the private sector. TCI works with four Accelerator Hubs covering East Africa, Francophone West Africa, India and Nigeria. As a learning consortium, TCI seeks to continuously challenge its thinking, assumptions and adaptations in order to improve its model to not only ensure rapid, sustainable scale-up of evidence-based family planning and AYSRH interventions but also for other health and development interventions more broadly.
