Job Description

Position Overview:

The primary objective of this summer internship is to support Chemonics’ Private Sector Engagement (PSE) Practice. The PSE Practice has an ambitious plan to transform Chemonics’ engagement with the private sector and ensure innovations in PSE are incorporated into our company core business, including new business proposals and projects across all sectors and geographies. The Practice’s primary goal is to position Chemonics as a thought leader in effective collaboration with the private sector. Our work focuses on leveraging the knowledge, innovations, and resources of the private sector to mobilize private capital to deliver high impact development solutions. While the Practice works across all sectors and geographies, core work is driven by market trends and donor priorities, and thus has focused on the following areas: (1) climate finance; (2) health finance; and (3) gender lens investing. As an incredibly crosscutting topic area, the PSE Practice facilitates meaningful collaboration and partnerships across Chemonics’ technical practices, projects, and global workforce. The PSE Practice intern will be an integral member of the team and will strengthen the Practice’s capacity to achieve its goals. The internship will take a dual-pronged approach focused on both the intern supporting the PSE Practice achieve key goals, as well as providing the intern with exciting professional development opportunities that strengthen their capacity to understand and apply PSE approaches in development programming. Responsibilities:

Administrative:

  • Participate in all internship activities and events scheduled during normal business hours.
  • Attend regular 1:1 check-ins with supervisor and bi-weekly PSE team meeting to monitor progress and address outstanding questions.
  • Attend monthly PSE Community of Practice Team meetings.
  • Attend regular USG Strategy Division meetings.
  • Attend relevant cross-practice meetings such as Inclusive Economic Growth (IEG) Working Group Meetings, Economic Growth and Trade (EGT)+ Check-in’s, etc. (list to be determined by supervisor and intern based on workload and relevancy).
  • With time permitting, the supervisor and team may share additional optional meetings for intern attendance for learning and notetaking.

Business Development:

  • Lead data entry and record-keeping to enable the PSE Practice to track, analyze, and share PSE trends and performance.
  • Support the regular maintenance and potential development of key PSE resources and documents.
  • Support relationship building and engagement with clients, consultants, and counterparts to advance PSE partnerships.
  • Attend and take notes for webinars, strategy sessions, and/or other relevant meetings to capture the competitive landscape, client preferences, potential partners and personnel, and innovative or evidence-based approaches for consideration.
  • Support in the initial analysis of new solicitations from a PSE perspective that the company intends to pursue.

Technical Approach:

  • Lead the development of one key technical deliverable/project to support the advancement of PSE priorities, to be agreed upon by the PSE team and intern.
  • Conduct research, organize information, or otherwise support demand-driven technical needs for PSE team requests.
  • Support and facilitate internal connections among relevant projects.
  • Research cutting-edge PSE tools, frameworks, and/or approaches.
  • Maintain records for PSE staff and external consultants with expertise in PSE and associated sub-specialties.
  • Support research, capture, and documentation of project innovation and learning for internal and/or external learning and distribution.

Industry Outreach and Client Engagement:

  • Support efforts to highlight PSE work on key industry platforms and during relevant global events, this could include supporting research and writing for external facing Chemonics content, such as technical blogs or case studies.
  • Provide administrative support to cohort of PSE attendees at priority conferences.
  • Organize logistics for internal and external, virtual, or in-person PSE Practice meetings, presentations, consultations, and events.
  • Support in the management of industry memberships held by the PSE Practice for broader company staff.

Requirements:

  • Enrolled student currently pursuing a graduate degree (first year of program completed) or recent graduate from master’s degree program. Graduates of bachelor’s degree program with relevant work experience may also be eligible.
  • Demonstrated interest in international development, private sector engagement, and/or related topics.
  • Strong preference for candidates with direct experience (either education or work experience) in private sector engagement or related topics. This includes, but is not limited to mobilizing private capital, impact investing, investment facilitation, blended finance, catalytic capital, climate finance, health finance, gender lens investing, etc.
  • Ability to work on a team and independently on projects and tasks.
  • Familiarity with business development efforts for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), or other donors.
  • Ability to multitask with strong attention to detail, organization, and time management with minimum oversight.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle routine administrative tasks and operational issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow standard practices and procedures, receive general instruction and supervision, and contribute to projects and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness in problem solving and initiative to learn new skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to take initiative.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
