Duties and Responsibilities

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region’s economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring, and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise, and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. The internship is not paid and is offered on a flexible basis (five days per week; 35 hours; working hours to be agreed upon with supervisor, remote or hybrid).

To work remotely the applicant shall have full access to a computer with a modern browser and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams) installed to perform the tasks within the scope of the internship. The computer must have basic IT security best practices implemented. At a minimum, the applicant should have:

• Software and security updates for the operating system.
• Built-in operating system’s firewall enabled.
• Password manager enabled to create strong passwords and to secure access to all UN-related resources.

There are two available internships at the Sustainable Development and Natural Resources Unit at the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean Subregional Headquarters in Mexico City, Mexico. The internship will last 6 months, depending on the needs of the Office. Candidates may be selected throughout the posting period, on an “as-needed” basis.

Under the supervision or overall guidance of Economics Officer, the interns will support the team in the analysis of social, economic, and environmental information and data on climate financing, climate change, and value chains. Tasks will include:

• Elaborating literature reviews on climate and green financing in agriculture.
• Reviewing national documents and data on agricultural emissions, climate change adaptation and mitigation policies, and prospective analysis.
• Data collection and analysis on financing, emissions, and other relevant topics in agriculture.
• Supporting other ongoing projects in the Unit, including agricultural value chains, bioeconomy, and rural development.
• Exchanging findings and ideas with colleagues.
• Proposing new or emerging topics.

This internship is for up to 6 months and designed to be flexible: remote or hybrid; 35 hours per week; working hours to be agreed upon with supervisor. The duration and modality can be adjusted on request of the successful candidate and the Sustainable Development and Natural Resources Unit.

Ultimate result of service

1. The intern will gather data and produce technical inputs for ongoing research on the estimation of greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector and climate change mitigation and adaptation policies.
2. The intern will gather data and conduct a literature review on climate and green financing in the agricultural sector.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

• be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
• be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

• Studies in economics, agriculture, climate change, sustainable development or related are desirable.
• Data analysis skills are desirable.
• Knowledge of climate financing, climate change or agriculture is desirable.
• Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
• Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.
