Responsibilities Under the general supervision of the Chief of the Language Services Section, ICTR and the direct supervision of the Head, Kinyarwanda Translation Sub-Unit, ICTR, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: • Translates, subject to such degree of revision as may be required from English or French (working languages) or Kinyarwanda into the target language the full range of documents dealt with by the ICTR (inter alia, motions, decisions etc.,), frequently involving the use of legal terminology. • Must aim at a high standard of accuracy, consistency and faithfulness to the spirit, style and nuances of the original; observe the established terminology and usage; and ensure, as far as possible, consistency with other translators working on the same document. • Uses all sources of reference, information and consultation relevant to the text in hand and carries out any research required to solve terminological problems. • Must maintain an adequate speed and volume of output, due account being taken of the difficulty of the text and the specified deadlines. Identifies new terminology material and submits it for the consideration of revisers. • Level of revision required should decrease as more experience is gained the ultimate goal being that work produced needs only monitoring by a reviser. • Undertakes research related to the texts in hand. Terms developed in the course of this research are contributions to the general store of terminology available and will be considered in the establishment of standard terminology at higher levels. • Develops new terminology for use where none exists in the target language. • Carries out linguistic research and prepares terminological bulletins and glossaries, technical vocabularies and related reference tools. • Counsels and assists designated translators and briefs them on the procedures and practices of the Service, terminology and a broad range of subjects, as required. • Participates in the setting of terminology standards. • May perform other related duties, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS Education A first level degree in relevant modern languages or law from a university or from an institution of equivalent status and/or diploma from an internationally recognized school of translation.
Work Experience At least five years of translation experience (preferably in the context of an international organization or a government agency). A sound knowledge of the various fields of law. Knowledge of a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations (political, social, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical), with a recognized specialization in law. Familiarity with the aims and procedures of international organizations functioning at government level. Familiarity with computer software used in the United Nations; facility in using United Nations terminology databases and word-processing programs. Ability to use personal computers and contemporary software. Experience in legal translation, particularly in the field of criminal law, is an asset.
Languages English and French are the working Languages of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). For the post advertised, a thorough command of Kinyarwanda, which must be the mother tongue, and an excellent knowledge of French and or English are required.
Other Skills Ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure. A broad cultural background. Initiative, judgement, thoroughness and ability to maintain harmonious working relationships in a multinational team. Ability to assimilate technical subjects.
