Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting

  • The internship is with the Library of the Registry of the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (“Mechanism”) in Arusha.
  • The Mechanism was established by the UN Security Council in 2010 to continue essential functions of the ICTR and ICTY after their closure.
  • The Registry provides administrative, legal, policy, and diplomatic support, and supervises:
    • Court support services
    • Enforcement of sentences
    • Monitoring of cases referred to national courts
    • Preservation and access to archives (ICTR, ICTY, and Mechanism)
    • Protection of victims and witnesses
    • Assistance to national jurisdictions
  • The library hosts a broad collection including international law, criminal law, genocide, and human rights.
  • Services include:
    • Online Public Access Catalogues
    • Document delivery (email and in-person)
    • Reference and research assistance

Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Library Assistant, the intern will:

  • Assist in library circulation: retrieval, check-out, discharge, and recall of materials
  • Register new materials and perform cataloguing operations
  • Assign classification codes, print and affix call number labels
  • Provide information to visitors, including through peer libraries
  • Locate online journal articles and respond to reference queries
  • Catalogue, index, and maintain materials in the library system
  • Guide library users, conduct tours, and respond to inquiries
  • Compile daily news summaries from diverse media sources
  • Research and compile basic information for communication products
  • Support public relations and official visit preparations
  • Help implement outreach activities including social media content
  • Conduct archival research for visual content supporting court activity
  • Provide general administrative support to daily library functions
Qualifications/Special Skills
  • Must meet one of the following at the time of application:
    • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final year of a relevant first university degree (minimum bachelor’s level)
    • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate degree (master’s or equivalent)
  • Fields of study include: Library/Information Science, Information Management, Communications, Journalism, Multimedia Studies, or related areas
  • No work experience is required, but applicants should:
    • Demonstrate that their education or skills will benefit the UN during the internship
    • Be proficient in major social media platforms
    • Have knowledge of photography and/or audio-visual production (desirable)
    • Be computer literate in standard software applications
    • Have familiarity with library cataloguing systems (desirable)
Languages
  • Fluency in English is required
  • Knowledge of French, Kinyarwanda, or Kiswahili is desirable
