19 local organizations to watch: mDoc

This digital health company has expanded from its roots developing an AI chatbot health coach.

    By Devex Editor // 13 November 2024
📋 What they do mDoc is a digital health company that uses artificial intelligence to offer virtual care to people living with, or at risk of, chronic conditions. This personalized care is accessed through a network of health care providers and is offered 24/7 through mobile and web technologies. 👀 Why we’re watching AI is vulnerable to human bias. Yet this e-health startup gathers data from overlooked sub-Saharan African communities and inputs them into their AI models. It also offers services in local languages and leverages speech-to-text and speech-to-voice tools. It works at the intersection of technology and business to address global health challenges. Some of its latest innovations include: • CompleteHealth: This app started as an AI chatbot, called “Kem,” that offered virtual health coaching during COVID-19. It’s since expanded to provide health coaching across maternal, newborn, and child health; noncommunicable diseases; sexual reproductive health; mental health; and more. • NudgeHubs: These technology-enabled hubs offer members in-person consultation sessions with health coaches. • NaviHealth: A directory of health care providers, facilities, and services around the globe. It's geocoded, which means users can search to find the ones closest to them. • mDoc Quality Network, or MQN: This technology works to combat workforce shortages by providing in-person and virtual training to 15,000 front-line workers across Africa. 🏢 Countries of operation Nigeria, with reach across sub-Saharan Africa. 🗓️ Founding year 2013. ➕ Leadership Nneka Mobisson, co-founder and CEO. 📊 Impact snapshot • Reached over 120,000 members in underserved communities across 33 of Nigeria's 36 states. Most members earn less than $2 per day and over 30% use basic phones without the internet. 💡Insider scoop • Complex and changing regulatory requirements across African countries can slow expansion. mDoc also faces market-based constraints — low financial resources in the communities they serve — and infrastructure issues such as inconsistent internet access. It therefore works closely with regulatory authorities. • It’s on track to expand its membership base from 120,000 to over 2 million people. How will it get there? Through research and evidence, including improving AI capabilities to provide more tailored health recommendations and predictive analytics. ➡️ Follow 🌐 mymdoc.com
