The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria should remain global and any reviews of its prioritization model should consider the needs of people in middle-income countries, a group of non-governmental and community organizations based in Latin America and the Caribbean wrote in a petition addressed to the Global Fund board.
The petition is a reaction of Amigos del Fondo Mundial LAC, or Latin America and the Caribbean Friends of the Global Fund, to reports that the international organization is planning to review the existing prioritization model it uses to determine how funding proposals are approved.
“Proposed changes to the prioritisation model could exclude countries with concentrated epidemics, denying access to a significant number of most affected population groups. This will further compound existing restrictions to access Global Fund resources as established within the eligibility criteria,” the petition said.
“The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria must continue being global. Decisions on the allocation of funding must continue to be based on evidence, technically sound proposals and efficient and effective performance,” it added.
