The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria reached $11.34 billion of its $18 billion target during its highly anticipated high-level pledging event in Johannesburg on Friday. This is the organization’s eighth replenishment and will fund its work between 2026 and 2029.

While the global health sector expressed disappointment that top donors reduced their support and the overall target fell short, the sector also praised the unexpected United States pledge of $4.6 billion.

The wild card of the event was the U.S. — the fund’s largest donor, accounting for 33% of the organization’s total funding — given that the country dismantled its foreign aid infrastructure this year and pulled out of many of its multilateral commitments.
