'A lost decade': Latin America must embrace sustainable development for recovery, UN report says

WASHINGTON — Latin America and the Caribbean must address a “crisis in growth” if it is to successfully overcome the impacts of COVID-19 along with long-standing regional inequality and lagging economies, according to United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean Executive Secretary Alicia Bárcena.

Bárcena spoke Tuesday presenting ECLAC’s report outlining a “transformative” path to recovery for Latin America and the Caribbean, which must include three dimensions of sustainable growth — economic, social, and environmental — in “a new development model” for the region.

“This is the most important thing about this document: We are recognizing that the three dimensions of sustainable development must be seen together. They cannot be separated one from the other. They’re integrated,” Bárcena said.
