A World Bank jobs guide: Where it’s hiring, key sectors, and top roles

Landing a job at the World Bank is a career aspiration for global development professionals worldwide, and its work has never been more critical than in recent years, especially as it navigates a complex and ever-changing funding landscape. The reduction in bilateral aid and international funding by the U.S. government, imposed by the Trump administration, has also affected the work of the World Bank since the U.S. is its largest shareholder. While there is a lot of uncertainty and internal changes in the bank, its work and the need for new talent continue. Data from the Devex job board shows that the World Bank has published 915 jobs from Jan. 1 to Oct. 1 of this year, a 31.2% decrease from the same period last year, when the World Bank published 1,329 jobs. Job openings from the World Bank span different sectors, and the highest number of opportunities can be found in finance, ICT, and environment sectors. As the World Bank annual meetings, held from Oct. 13 to 18, come to a close, we explore in this article everything you need to know about the hiring landscape at the World Bank, including what you can expect to earn based on regions, the top countries where it’s hiring, and its highest-paid jobs since Jan. 1. The salary analysis includes 576 job postings, comprising the World Bank’s highest-paid job titles and average salary differences between regions since Jan. 1 of this year. To maintain consistency in the analysis, salaries that were not disclosed in U.S. dollars were converted from their original currencies. World Bank salaries based on regions The World Bank publicly discloses its salary scales for many of its advertised positions, with its salary structure based on the experience level and local market conditions.
