Data download: Jobs at the World Bank

As we continue assessing the state of development job opportunities across the globe, our latest job board data analysis dug into 576 job postings, comprised of the World Bank’s highest-paid job titles and average salary differences between regions since Jan. 1 of this year. Here are a few key takeaways from our analysis.

    • The World Bank publicly discloses its salary scales for many positions, based on the experience level and local market conditions. We found that salary grade “GF,” with an average salary between $80,112 and $148,899, is the most common scale globally.

    • While the U.S. remains a key hub for operations, the highest demand for on-the-ground talent is concentrated in Africa and South Asia, including Madagascar, Ethiopia, Pakistan, and India.

    • The highest-paid World Bank position advertised on Devex this year was for a regional vice president of the Latin America and Caribbean region, based in Washington, D.C., and offering an annual salary range of $340,100 to $460,200.

    Weathering the storm

“While specific roles may vary by region and programme needs, [UNDP] values expertise in areas such as fundraising, donor engagement, innovative financing mechanisms, and strategic partnerships.”

    — David Bearfield, director for the Office of Human Resources, the U.N. Development Programme

Hiring remains slow across global development organizations, with job opportunities limited. But certain roles have been hit harder than others, according to Dexex job board data and insights from a range of sector experts who spoke to Devex contributor Emma Smith.

Some are seeing more job postings related to revenue generation, as many organizations reassess their approach to business development. Employers are looking for experts who can create a strategy around specific types of partners, such as foundations or institutions, according to Katrina Roxas, director of Talent Solutions at Devex.

Uzma Ashraf Barton, a consultant on international economic policy and investment strategy, has noticed more openings around corporate engagement, high-impact philanthropy, and donor relations. Funding diversification is also a priority, according to the employers Devex spoke to.

On the flip side, programming roles have been among the hardest hit by budget cuts. As projects have been paused or downsized, monitoring and evaluation, or M&E, and audit-related roles are down 38% since last year, according to Devex’s job board.

    Around the watercooler

News and views from around global development worth knowing about.

    • CDC staff-cut fallout. A haphazard mass slashing of staff at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention over the weekend has left questions around the impact of these terminations on the agency’s programming.

    • World Bank president talks jobs. During the World Bank-IMF annual meetings, Ajay Banga held a town hall with members of civil society, where jobs were clearly his favorite talking point.

    • Funding crisis as opportunity? That was the hope of many global health leaders who spoke at this year’s World Health Summit in Berlin. Check out the key messages that emerged from the event.
