Afghan President Hamid Karzai begged Europe to continue supporting his country even after the September parliamentary elections. The polls will be the final leg of the rebuilding program for Afghanistan following the collapse of the Taliban regime in 2001. Karzai said that the European Union has been generous towards the Central Asian nation since that momentous event. He now asks the E.U. to make "a multi-year commitment" towards Afghanistan, arguing that the bloc?s sustaining support will enable the Central Asian country to "be a stable, democratic member of the international community."
