Afghanistan has shut down 20 international and 152 national nongovernment organizations following the groups’ failure to report on their operations and finances.
The licenses were revoked after the NGOs failed to report their activities to the Afghan Ministry of Economy for almost two years, a spokesperson of the ministry said. He explained that NGOs working in Afghanistan are required to submit reports to the Ministry of Economy every six months.
Among the international NGOs are Save the Children Japan, International Dispensary Association, Samaritan’s Purse and the Afghan Children’s Relief Organization.
The NGOs would be allowed to appeal the annulment of their licenses, Reuters says.
