From drones to document digitization, new algorithms to automated monitoring tools, the International Committee of the Red Cross is exploring a multitude of ways in which artificial intelligence might enhance its mission of protecting and assisting those caught in armed conflict.
A year ago, it opened a space in Luxembourg for its cyberspace delegation to develop, test, and explore various forms of digital technology, including AI. Philippe Marc Stoll, an ICRC senior “techplomacy” delegate, described the center as a “sandbox” where “tech geeks” can trial various AI ideas.
“The process is strict because we don’t want … to create new problems or harm for populations if we use it without having tested it in a safe space,” Stoll said.
