Former Argentinean president Fernando de la Rua of Argentina has been charged with bribery. A federal court has accused him of paying bribes to parliamentarians in exchange for support for a controversial labor law. Elected president of Argentina in 1999, two years later De la Rua was forced to resign following violent protests against his government, sparked by the country’s economic crisis. In other news, Paul Navone, a retired military officer accused of abducting babies during Argentina’s 1976-1983 “dirty war” was killed by a gunshot to the head just days before he was to testify in court.
