    Ask Devex career webinar

Resident career guru Kate Warren launches Ask Devex, a new monthly online event for Career Account members to ask all of their most pressing career questions and get advice directly from the experts.

    By Emma Smith // 13 February 2018
The global development sector is quite unlike any other, and the usual career advice and rules do not always apply. From humanitarian aid workers, to United States Agency for International Development consultants, to policy makers in Brussels, there are hundreds of different ways global development professionals are doing good. It is also a very competitive job market, where increasingly the private sector, tech companies, and startups are contributing new ideas and changing the types of skill sets in demand. Through practical advice, insider insights, and exclusive webinars, Devex strives to answer your most pressing career questions and help you navigate the sector. We know it’s difficult to cover everything, however. That’s why we’ve launched Ask Devex, a new monthly online event for Career Account members where you can directly ask resident career guru, Kate Warren, for advice on your next steps. “We thought it would be helpful for our members to have a monthly session where you can just ask all of those questions, and we will try to do our best to help,” explains Warren, executive vice president at Devex. The launch of the online event last week saw Warren talk through some of the most common challenges of landing a job in global development — from the basics of a recruiter-ready CV, to setting up informational interviews, and translating experience from other sectors. Warren also addressed some of the more specific obstacles to getting a job in the sector, sharing advice for overcoming age bias, calculating daily pay rates, and identifying consultancy roles. As someone who is talking regularly with global development recruiters, consultancy groups, NGOs and aid agencies, Warren is in-the-know when it comes to the latest hiring trends and employers’ biggest pet peeves. Ask Devex will take place the first Wednesday of every month and will occasionally feature other recruiters and experts from the sector to help answer members’ questions. Looking to make a career move? Visit our career center for expert advice on how to navigate your job search — all you need is a Devex Career Account to get started.
