Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard is proposing to impose a temporary income tax that is expected to raise some 1.8 billion Australian dollars (USD1.79 billion) to be used for reconstruction efforts following the massive flooding that devastated Queensland. The tax would be imposed for a year starting July 1 on Australians earning more than 50,000 Australian dollars annually.
