Mark Newton

Mark Newton

Dr. Mark Newton is a professor of clinical anesthesiology, a pediatric anesthesiologist, and serves as director of Vanderbilt International Anesthesia (VIA) and chief of anesthesiology at Kijabe Hospital in Kenya. Dr. Newton and his family moved to Kenya in 1997, where he developed a nurse anesthesia program in East Africa based at Kijabe Hospital. Over the last 20 years, he has also been involved in developing anesthesia capacity building projects in South Sudan, Somaliland, and Ethiopia.

Mark Sheard is the chief executive of World Vision UK. World Vision works in over 100 countries, helping the most vulnerable children overcome poverty and experience fullness of life. After a successful career in marketing, Mark was appointed to the Archbishops’ Council of the Church of England in 2017 and is chair of the Mission and Public Affairs Council.

Mark van Ommeren

Dr. Mark van Ommeren is public mental health adviser at the World Health Organization and focal point for mental health and psychosocial support in emergencies. His job includes advising and supporting all relevant agencies in providing the best possible social and mental health supports to people affected by war and other disaster. He has played a key role in initiating and drafting the most widely used mental health documents in emergencies, including IASC Guidelines and Sphere Standards.

Mark Whitehouse

Mark Whitehouse, vice president at IREX, leads the company’s civil society and media development programs, focusing on the intersection of civil society and media in promoting good governance. Since joining IREX in 1997, Whitehouse has managed projects funded by USAID, the U.S. Department of State and private donors with a focus on effective and appropriate cooperation between media professionals, citizen journalists, governments and civil society organizations.

Lagon, Ph.D. is chief policy officer at the Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; adjunct professor in the Georgetown University Master of Science in Foreign Service program. He has headed: the State Department's anti-human trafficking office as ambassador; Freedom House; and anti-trafficking NGO Polaris. His areas of expertise include global institutions and governance, global health, and human rights.

Marlene Attzs is a lecturer in economics at The University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. She has more than 20 years’ experience as an economist focusing primarily on the economics of sustainable development and has worked as a consultant for the Caribbean Development Bank and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency. She currently serves as a civil society advisory governor on the Commonwealth Foundation's board.
