The World Bank is providing $1.2 billion for the construction of a major river bridge that would link southwestern Bangladesh to the central and eastern parts of the country.
The Padma bridge project is estimated to cost a total of $2.93 billion and is also supported by the Asian Development Bank and the Islamic Development Bank, Gulf News reports.
Japan has put on hold the signing of the $400 million loan it initially pledged for the project because it wanted to focus more post-tsunami rebuilding efforts, a Bangladeshi official told Reuters in March.
