The Howard G. Buffett Foundation has contributed $4 million to efforts targeting the development of sorghum fortified with vitamin A, zinc and iron that can be grown in Africa.
The project, which began in 2005, involves Pioneer Hi-Bred International, the agricultural unit of the science-based products and services company DuPont, the Africa-led public-private partnership African Biofortified Sorghum Consortium, and the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, the world’s biggest nonprofit independent research institute focused on plant science, Reuters notes.
A food staple in parts of Africa, sorghum is similar to but is more drought-tolerant than corn.
