Canada Urged to Modernize Foreign Aid Program

A coalition of international development stakeholders is calling on the Canadian government to improve the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of its foreign aid investments.

The Foreign Assistance Reform Network, led by Engineers Without Borders, has proposed priority actions for modernizing Canadian foreign aid programs including the establishment of an expanded, senior Cabinet-level Department for International Development that will oversee the harmonization of aid policies across government agencies.

The coalition is also calling for the creation of an expert-led Independent Commission for Aid Impact to appraise the effectiveness of Canadian aid investments, and a venture-focused Implementation Innovation Fund that will support innovative development initiatives.

Canada should also improve the transparency of its aid programs by joining the International Aid Transparency Initiative, which puts out a common global standard for publishing aid information, according to NetNewsledger.com.
