As a professional international monitoring, evaluation, and learning — or MEL — consultant, Abhirup Bhunia provides evidence-based guidance to help decision-makers and policymakers assess what is likely to be most effective for achieving sustainable impact in global development. Part of this involves highlighting what’s not working and providing recommendations to redirect efforts to be more efficient.
“MEL professionals create an indirect impact by forcing everyone to think of impact when they design and implement programs, or even having stakeholders ponder about accountability since a lot of money is being funneled. We are often touted as the ‘critical friends,’ and I think that is an impactful hat to don,” Bhunia said.
Over a 10-year career, Abhirup has worked with governments, NGOs, funding organizations, and private multinational consultancies. He has collaborated across sectors including economic development, women's empowerment, financial inclusion and digital development, in countries such as India, Myanmar, Ethiopia, and Bangladesh. He is currently working with the International Labour Organization in Southeast Asia to propel women’s entrepreneurship and with the United States Agency for International Development to improve business-enabling environments in Asia-Pacific, among other ongoing projects.
