Conference call: The future of UK aid

Devex's Jessica Abrahams and the Center for Global Development's Ian Mitchell discuss the implications of Brexit, Global Britain, and the integrated foreign policy review for development.

    By Devex Editor // 27 March 2020
The future of U.K. aid is more uncertain than ever. The past year has seen rapid changes in leadership, threats to the Department for International Development’s independence, and public skepticism over the U.K.’s aid spending targets. Now, in the post-Brexit era, the role of development in Britain’s foreign policy is up for debate with the advent of a trade and security-focused “Global Britain” agenda. Devex Deputy News Editor Jessica Abrahams spoke with the Center for Global Development’s Ian Mitchell for insights into current events and what the future might hold for U.K. development policy. Highlights from this conference call include: • An examination of the broader political context around U.K. aid, including how the U.K. might do development in the post-Brexit era. • What the Global Britain agenda entails and where development fits into it. • What can be expected from the International Development Committee and integrated foreign policy reviews. • Details of the U.K.’s international response to COVID-19, and its potential to reignite the debate on domestic versus international spending concerns. Speaker: Ian Mitchell, co-director of development cooperation in Europe and senior policy fellow, Center for Global Development Moderator: Jessica Abrahams, deputy news editor, Devex Have follow-up questions?
