COVID-19 — a timeline of the coronavirus outbreak

From the onset of the outbreak of a mysterious disease in the city of Wuhan, Hubei province, China, in late 2019, Devex began documenting the key moments of what would soon become the global COVID-19 pandemic. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern on Jan. 30, 2020, and characterized it as a pandemic on March 11 of that year.  

Today, WHO maintains the pandemic remains a global health emergency of concern. But most countries have now eased COVID-19 restrictions.

In our timelines, broken down by year, we tracked how the pandemic unfolded in the last three years, as well as how world leaders and aid institutions responded.
